Mafia Wars Collections include valuable items that add attributes to your characters. They are given to you as bonus items randomly during the game and cannot simply be bought like some weapons. You should keep an eye on your collection. If you notice that you are in need of any one of the Mafia Wars Collections then simply place this on your wish list. It will not be too long before one of your family members gifts it to you.
Mafia Wars Collection are another reason that demonstrates the value of a big family. The bigger your family the greater the likelihood of receiving gifts so if you have not done already you should be attempting one of the many strategies to grow your family.
Each of the Mafia Wars Collections is linked to a particular job tier so if you want to gain these by doing jobs concentrate on the tier that is linked to you item.

Just as any self respecting Mafia boss would you keep these valuables in a vault. After you collect seven of the items they are placed in your vault. You can click on the inventory tab and collections tab to view them.
Once you complete your collection you should click the vault to unlock upgrades. As you would expect all of the upgrades are different, some will add to your defence while others will help you level up faster.
